Information science plays a huge role in modern society as the information revolution keeps rolling all over, touching and improving all aspects of our daily life and transforming our society to a better one. It is also of crucial importance in almost all research directions. It is amazing how one can significantly raise the level of his/her research and the quality of the research results by using modern computational techniques and paradigms. In addition, the development of new machines and systems is nowadays unthinkable without computers and information technologies. In the end, human beings are also biological machines functioning by the laws of physics and information science. How will the knowledge gained in the College of Information Science and Engineering be useful for students after graduation? The fundamental subjects the students learn at the College are the cornerstones of the modern information science, and having strong fundamentals is very important for the start of a successful professional career. Upon graduation, having learnt the core subjects of computer science and mastered the computer programming skills, the students will be well prepared to face and deal with practical engineering problems, be it in the industry or in academia. Please describe your major research, activities, and current research themes. My research interests lie in the fields of robotics and biological systems that demonstrate aesthetically “beautiful” movements and provide a motivation for developing intelligent robots. While living creatures offer a proof-of-concept for intelligent motion control, our understanding of such systems is definitely not complete. On the other hand, we possess a much better understanding of how robots work, although they clearly have many shortcomings. My research goal is to bridge the gap between robotic and biological systems. One of the paths toward achieving this goal is in designing intelligent machines and control systems, based on biologically-inspired principles together with the classical dynamics and the modern control theory. My current research activities include modeling and analysis of human-like movements, and motion control of rolling robotic systems (such as BB-8 droid in the recent Star Wars movie). What are your expectations for new students entering the university? How would you like to see them progress during their time at the university? I would very much like it if the new students have curiosity about how artificial (such as robots) and natural (such as animals) systems work and move. I would also like it if they have a strong motivation to establish a solid background in mathematics, physics, and computer programming. These subjects are very important in design of modern control systems, and I expect the students will acquire the corresponding theoretical knowledge and practical skills during their university time. I also expect the students will acquire the ability of independent thinking and use it in setting out and solving practical problems.
